Interviewing

Both classes have been honing their interview skills by practising on each other, pupils in the playground and family members!

Some people seem to be destined to be chat show hosts!

We've been learning the differences between open and closed questions and the importance of listening carefully to the answers.
Filming for the report is well underway and Ms Mackay is busy editing! I wonder if there will be lots of funny out takes?
We have had a chance to interview 'real' people too with a visit from both Liam McArthur (MSP) and Alistair Carmichael (MP).

Everyone listened well and we enjoyed learning interesting facts about their different roles in the community.
The local news group interviewed Kick Start Kirkwall development officer, Laura Cromarty about the developments at the Peedie Sea.
It was rather cold at the Peedie Sea but hopefully the red noses won't show up too much on the film!

Reporting skills

On Tuesday 9th Fionn McArthur came to talk to us about reporting. He is our mentor for the school report.
He showed us some of the reports he has done for BBC Reorting Scotland and gave us tips on writing news and filming.
He made us aware of how we need to make sure our information is accurate.
We also have to use good headlines to capture the interest of our audience and stick to the main points.
We had a very interesting discussion and asked lots of questions. We are ready to start organising and writing our local story and Fionn is helping us with links for an international report.
We were all in our pyjamas that day as we were raising funds for the Haiti disaster appeal. We don't normally dress like that!
